Since 1996, Pickens Railway has connected Upstate manufacturers and industries to the national rail network through safe, dependable service and dual-served access.
Family-owned and operated since 1996, Pickens Railway has long served as an essential freight connection for manufacturers and industries across the Upstate. As a short line freight railroad, Pickens plays a critical role in moving the raw materials and freight that keep businesses running while delivering the kind of responsive, relationship-driven service only a locally rooted railroad can provide.
From day-to-day operations to long-term customer relationships, we’re known for dependable service, hands-on leadership, and a strong commitment to the industries and communities it serves.
Short line railroads may be smaller in size, but they play an essential role in America’s freight network. Made up of more than 600 small business freight railroads, the short line industry was built by entrepreneurs who helped save marginal rail lines from abandonment and turn them into thriving businesses that continue serving industries and communities today.
Across the United States, short lines operate nearly 50,000 route miles, representing 29% of the nation’s freight rail network, and serve more than 10,000 customers. They also provide the critical first- and last-mile service that helps connect local industries to the national rail system.
Pickens Railway operates a 28.5-mile line in Anderson County, interchanging with Norfolk Southern in Anderson and receiving CSXT freight in Belton. That dual-served access gives Pickens the flexibility and connectivity to support the manufacturers and industrial customers that rely on efficient freight movement throughout the region. Located between Atlanta and Charlotte with convenient access to I-85, Pickens is strategically positioned to serve Upstate industry while connecting to the broader freight rail network.
Pickens Railway hauls over 7,000 railcars per year, replacing over 28,000 trucks on Upstate roads. From raw materials and plastics to paper products and industrial commodities, the freight moved by rail helps support manufacturers, reduce roadway congestion, and keep essential goods moving.
At Pickens Railway, safety is part of every mile. The railroad has built a strong reputation for operational excellence and a culture of responsibility, earning recognition through the Jake With Distinction Award for safety.
Pickens is also an active member of Operation Lifesaver and supports public education efforts that help raise awareness around railroad safety for all ages.
Pickens Railway is proud to support the manufacturers, businesses, and communities that help drive the Upstate forward. In addition to serving industrial customers throughout the region, Pickens maintains strong relationships with local and regional organizations including the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, Upstate Alliance, and Innovate Anderson.
As a family-owned railroad with deep regional roots, Pickens believes in showing up for the industries it serves and the communities it calls home.
